WooCommerce

WordPress e-commerce plugin

WooCommerce is a free plugin that turns a WordPress site into an online shop – easy to start with, but reliant on more extensions as the shop grows.

What is WooCommerce?

WooCommerce is an open-source WordPress plugin that adds a product catalogue, cart, orders and payments to a site. In a classic set-up it is a PHP monolith: the theme, sales logic and admin panel all run in one system. Further features come from extensions, so a larger shop means many plugins to update and keep an eye on for performance.

How we use it at Koda Plus

We don’t build new shops on WooCommerce – we move shops off it to Medusa or Shopify. A migration starts with an inventory of URLs, data and integrations nobody remembers any more, then every old address is mapped to a new one with a 301 redirect. We carry over products, variants, categories, customers and order history, make sure the new shop outputs at least the same structured data, and track indexing in Google Search Console after the switch.

When it makes sense

  • A simple B2C shop alongside an existing WordPress site
  • A standard checkout flow with no ERP integration
  • Worth moving when plugins slow down the shop and its updates
  • Time to switch when B2B, an ERP or new sales channels come in

Frequently asked questions
WooCommerce

  • Is WooCommerce free?

The plugin itself is free, but you pay for hosting, a theme and paid extensions. On top of that comes the time spent regularly updating WordPress, the theme and plugins.

  • Will moving my shop off WooCommerce hurt SEO?

It doesn’t have to. Drops mostly come from abandoned URLs and missing 301 redirects, so every URL with traffic or rankings gets a counterpart in the new shop, and titles, descriptions and structured data move with each product. Fluctuations in the first few weeks are normal – what matters is whether the trend returns to pre-migration levels.

  • WooCommerce or Medusa.js – which should I choose?

WooCommerce is enough when the shop is an add-on to a WordPress site and follows a standard model. Medusa makes sense once per-customer price lists, wholesale sales or an ERP integration come in – features that in WooCommerce usually mean yet more plugins.
